KykloIKOdromio, in collaboration with the Giolou Community Council, is organising a traditional loom-weaving workshop on Saturday, 12 September 2026, at 16:00, at the Old Primary School of Giolou.

The workshop is the first activity of the HerCraft Cyprus – Empowering Women through Sustainable Craft, Innovation and Cultural Heritage project, which is being implemented within the framework of the European programme SUBLIME SDGs – Unite Border Communities as Leaders of Inclusiveness, Mobilisation and Empowerment. The Cypriot partners of the SUBLIME SDGs project are the Nicosia Development Agency (ANEL) and “Hope For Children” CRC Policy Center.

HerCraft Cyprus aims to promote sustainable and traditional crafts as a means of empowering women, preserving cultural heritage and developing creative skills. Particular emphasis is placed on small communities and on creating opportunities for the exchange of knowledge and skills between different generations.

Through the first loom-weaving workshop in Giolou, participants will have the opportunity to become acquainted with the art of traditional weaving and to take an active part in creating woven pieces. Linking traditional craftsmanship with the principles of reuse and the circular economy, old, worn or unused fabrics will be cut into strips and incorporated into the weaving process.

The workshop will also include a parallel crochet activity, through which participants will become familiar with basic crochet techniques and create small handmade items such as dreamcatchers or coasters.

Participants are invited to bring with them, if available, handmade woven or knitted items, either their own creations or pieces that have been preserved within their families. These handicrafts will be presented in a small exhibition during the workshop, highlighting the traditions and stories passed down through craftsmanship from generation to generation.

The loom-weaving workshop in Giolou marks the beginning of a series of creative activities organised as part of HerCraft Cyprus. It will be followed by a workshop on creating a woven bookmark using a small tabletop loom, on 22 September in Nicosia, as well as a sewing workshop on 23 September in Nicosia, during which participants will create bags from reused fabrics inspired by the traditional Cypriot tagari bag. On 23 October 2026, a corn-husk weaving/basketry workshop will take place in Kalo Chorio Oreinis. An additional workshop, combining tradition with Artificial Intelligence and new technologies, will also be announced soon.

Through these activities, HerCraft Cyprus seeks to create a space where tradition meets contemporary creativity and sustainability, while giving women the opportunity to learn, create, share knowledge and contribute actively to the preservation and evolution of local cultural heritage.
