Baldness is no longer addressed only through hair transplantation. For the most common type of hair loss, androgenetic alopecia, medicinal treatments are available that can significantly slow hair loss and, in some cases, promote regrowth.
They are not, however, a permanent cure. Their benefits are generally maintained only while treatment continues.
Minoxidil: the best-known topical treatment
Minoxidil is applied directly to the scalp, usually as a solution or foam. It is used by both men and women.
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, it can reduce hair shedding, strengthen existing hairs and produce some regrowth. Results typically take six to 12 months to become visible.
Possible side effects include scalp irritation or itching, headache and unwanted facial-hair growth. More rarely, dizziness or a sensation of palpitations may occur. At the start of treatment, some people notice temporarily increased shedding.
Finasteride: a stronger option for men
Finasteride 1 mg is taken orally and reduces the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the hormone that plays a key role in androgenetic alopecia.
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, finasteride slows further hair loss in about 80% to 90% of men who use it, while some also experience regrowth.
Potential side effects do exist. Clinical studies have reported reduced libido, erectile dysfunction and ejaculation disorders in a small percentage of men.
In 2025, the European Medicines Agency confirmed that suicidal thoughts are a possible side effect of finasteride tablets, although their frequency cannot be estimated from the available data. The EMA also concluded that the medicine’s benefits continue to outweigh its risks for its approved uses. People taking finasteride should seek medical advice promptly if they experience mood changes or sexual side effects.
Are these medicines available in Cyprus?
Yes. An official announcement from Cyprus’ Pharmaceutical Services lists Propecia 1 mg and Finasteride Accord 1 mg, the finasteride dose used for androgenetic alopecia.
Cypriot official documents from 2026 also list minoxidil products, including Regaine Men’s Foam 5% and Regaine Women’s Foam 5%. Minoxidil 2% and 5% is also available through Cypriot pharmacies. Availability may change, so confirm the current position with a pharmacist.
Other options, such as dutasteride or oral minoxidil, also exist. Their use for hair loss may be off-label and requires medical supervision.
The most important first step is a diagnosis from a dermatologist. Not every case of hair loss is androgenetic alopecia: thyroid conditions, iron deficiency, medicines, hormonal disorders and other forms of alopecia require different care.

Usually not when hair follicles have been atrophied for many years. Treatment works best when started in the early stages of thinning.
The treatment benefit is gradually lost and hair loss returns.
It is not a usual treatment for women of reproductive age and is contraindicated in pregnancy because of risk to the fetus.
They serve different purposes. A transplant moves existing follicles, while medicines aim to preserve the natural hair that remains. The two approaches are often combined.
